James L. Brimeyer

Jim Brimeyer has taught writing courses at Northeast Iowa Community College since 1989. Before that, Jim taught high school English for 25 years. He received his BA and MA in English Education from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Jim's college composition textbook, You've Gotta' Have Heart in Your Writing, is now in its second edition. Jim's booklet, Response and Self-Reflection: the Heart and Soul of My Writing Classroom, was published in 2002 by the Iowa Writing Project. Jim's articles have been published in NCTE's Teaching English in the Two-Year College, The Successful Teacher, The Teaching Professor, Portfolio News, Iowa Language Arts News, and Julien's Journal. Jim is actively involved in the Iowa Writing Project and serves as an instructor for IWP, in addition to his teaching at NICC. He has given countless pedagogical presentations from coast to coast.

Jim Brimeyer's honors include the ICTELA Iowa Literacy Award, the National Council of Instructional Administrators Award for Community College Teaching, the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Texas at Austin, University of Notre Dame Educator Award, University of Chicago Outstanding Teacher Award, and the Iowa State University Excellence in Teaching Award. In 2005, Jim was nominated for the Iowa Community College Outstanding Faculty Award and the United States Professor of the Year Award. In 2005, Jim was selected Iowa Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Achievement and Support of Education. Jim was also named the 2006 Outstanding Community College Faculty Member by the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees.
