Uncial Press

So what is an UNCIAL anyway?
  • A small furry animal?
  • A high-end auto part?
  • A decadent desert?
  • The latest in Italian footwear?

Uncial, pronounced either "UN-see-ul" or "UN-shul" is a loose group of handwritten scripts that developed out of Roman and Greek handwriting from the 2nd century onward. Uncial and Half-uncial look similar and were used in similar ways, but actually come from different roots. This is all very interesting and a web search on "uncial script" will net you a huge list of scholarly articles with which to while away your leisure hours.

What does Uncial look like? Our logo is a loose interpretation and traditional Irish caligraphy is a modern version.

The most interesting thing I took away from my readings is that Uncial script developed in conjunction with new technology. The rounded forms of the letters were faster to write on the new, smoother, writing surfaces of paper and parchment. Development of the new surfaces also required new ink and allowed the change from scrolls to bound books. Uncial and all its cousins and children were born as one part of a chain of events and technological developments which brought about the modern book.

I believe that the technology that allows us to take a written work, produce and distribute it all electronically is a huge development in the craft of writing. The written word is a joy to me, whether it is from a 8th century illuminated manuscript or a blog about someone's pet. Bookstores and libraries have always been my playground. I am happy to be a part of bringing a third playground to the world by publishing eBooks. The library, bookstore, and now the borderless internet will promote the written word.

The goal of Uncial Press is to publish finely crafted and well-written eBooks. Fiction titles will feature strong character development, coherent plots, and engaging story lines, and will be both line and content edited. We believe readers prefer logically consistent stories with believable characters, leading to the magical willing suspension of disbelief that is the hallmark of fine writing. Non-fiction books will be held to similar high standards of writing and editing, and will be factual, absorbing, and technically correct. Uncial Press is dedicated to producing the finest in fiction and non-fiction and to providing excellent customer service.
