The Uncial Letter

So many holidays to celebrate in December. Just out of curiosity, we did a search for 'December holidays' and turned up some interesting ones. St. Nicholas' Day is the fifth, the Nobel Prize is awarded on the 10th, the Mayflower landed at Plymouth on either the 11th or the 21st (hmmm), the first Wright Brothers flight was on the 17th (and I'll bet those of you traveling by air this December wish they'd stuck to building bicycles), Boxing Day is the 26th, and World War II officially ended on 31 December 1946.

Many of the December holidays involve the giving of gifts, and we like those the best. There's no thrill quite like that of receiving a brightly wrapped gift and trying to guess what's inside. Whether you rip the paper off (as Star does in her excitement) or carefully peel it back (Jude's a bit obsessive), discovering the surprise inside is always fun. That's why we wanted to give you all a gift this December.

When we went looking for the perfect gift for people who read ebooks, we immediately thought of ebooks (what a concept!) So we chose three of our favorite holiday stories to share with you. You'll find all three on our website, in your choice of six formats, all yours for a few mouse clicks. The covers are old postcards, one postmarked 1911, one 1914, and one not postmarked, but with a message on it that indicates it's from the first decade of the 20th Century. Enjoy!

What's coming up in January? More great reads.

Lesley-Anne Mcleod returns with Clemmie's Major, an interesting gentleman you met in The Rake's Reflection. Clementina, eldest daughter of the Marquess of Cheriton, has always been able to solve her family's little problems and discontents. Now the widowed Countess of Carmelth, Clemmie finds herself facing problems she cannot solve alone. Someone is trying to harm her young son, and her brother is missing in action following the Battle of Waterloo. Major Gideon Rhyl, late of the 11th Dragoons, may be able to help, but his assistance becomes another problem. For Clemmie falls in love with him and he, wounded and facing an uncertain future, is thoroughly ineligible for marriage.

Final Argument by Kenneth L. Levinson, is a mystery we couldn't put down, and we bet you won't be able to either. A civil lawsuit turns decidedly uncivil when Daniel T. Scadman, the meanest lawyer in Colorado, is murdered during a pre-trial deposition at the office of Denver lawyer, Adam Larsen. As Scadman's successor moves the case toward trial Larsen's client, Josie Ballantine, who also happens to be his girlfriend, abruptly fires Larsen, placing her faith--and apparently much more-- into the eager hands of her young insurance lawyer. After Larsen confronts a corrupt court reporter, someone tries to frame him for her murder. Before the fog clears, Larsen receives a desperate plea from Josie. A secret from her past has emerged, turning the Quinlan real estate trial into a disaster. Ready or not, Larsen must act.

Looking ahead in the New Year, we'll be bringing you a sexy, humorous contemporary romance, more memorable Regencies, the first story in a new fantasy series, and some Novel Bytes for when you want a satisfying read, but haven't time for a whole book. Stay tuned...

May your holidays--whatever ones you celebrate--be joyous, and may 2007 bring you at least one of your dreams come true.

Keep well and keep smiling.
